Help – Valve sizing calculator

Simple calculation

To determine the required valve size, you first have to calculate the so called Kv value. The Kv value is a measurement of the valve size, giving the cubic metres/hour that can flow through a fully open valve at a pressure drop of 1 Bar across the valve.

In the simple calculation, the ideal Kv value is calculated, based on the flow and desired pressure drop across the valve.

After calculating the Kv value, the application area or valve range is selected in step 2.

Extended calculation and choice of actuator
In the extended calculation, the Kv value can be calculated directly via the flow, in the same way as in the simple calculation. Alternatively, the flow can be calculated from the effect and differential temperature. After determining the flow, the Kv is calculated in the same way as in the simple calculation.

Since the flow is affected by the media type, this can also be defined (water or glycol-mixed water).

After calculating the Kv value, the application area or valve range is selected in step 2.

Under "Options" you can choose to let the program find a suitable actuator for the calculated valve. Here you can also set any requirements with regard to supply voltage and control signal. The connection can be chosen here as well, which will affect the choice of valve when selecting "Application" in step 2. It is also possible to calculate the valve authority. If you check the valve authority box and enter the total pressure drop in the system, the valve authority will be displayed at the bottom of the box in step 2.

Choice of valve
When selecting the valve (step 2), you can choose by Application or Valve range. When choosing by application, the program will primarily select a valve from a valve range recommended by Regin. However, if a connection was chosen in the extended calculation, the valve will be selected with regard to the desired connection. If you already know exactly which valve you are looking for, use the drop-down menu "Valve range".

Once you have made your choices, the program will suggest a valve (and actuator) that fits your requirements. More than one valve may be suggested since valves can have different DN values (sizes) and the same Kv value.
